Gratitude is a spiritual practice but like any practice it can turn toxic and we end up gaslighting ourselves.

When my kids were younger we had a gratitude journal we’d keep throughout the year. We started before our kids even knew how to write. They’d have the option of drawing their gratitude entry or dictating it to us so we’d write it for them. It was a wonderful practice throughout the year with the culmination always being Thanksgiving Day.

The holiday would arrive and we’d sit down for our feast. After a full day of cooking and what felt like mere seconds to consume the food, we’d lounge in the family room with our tummies content and hearts full. We’d pile on the sofa and just lay there for a moment letting the fullness settle in. And then we’d grab the journal. The gratitude journal we’d been updating over the last 365 days. We’d re-experience funny memories, fond moments, confusing drawings, and scribbles that only made sense to the youngin just learning to write. 365 days of wins, picnics, day trips, and the kids reaching milestones.

If I were to put those journals into a time capsule, the future would have a certain view of our family. A partial view. A partial truth, not the whole truth.
