Last week, Gerson and I celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary by taking a quirky road trip that we had been looking forward to. We decided to explore the Extraterrestrial Highway. Yes, that is an actual location! I might write more about that in another post, but for now, I want to talk about one of the other places we visited on our road trip - Death Valley.

As we drove into Death Valley, the arid landscape seemed to stretch forever, a canvas painted with colors of ocher and gold under the beaming sun. By 2pm the temperature had reached 103 degrees Fahrenheit. 103 in April! Despite the harshness of the land, there was a tranquility, a stillness that seemed to whisper ancient secrets and stories of old. In the heart of this desert, I started to feel an invitation within me to allow my skin to touch the earth. I often actively engage my five senses on my walks, whether a casual walking of my dog Rocket or on a lengthy hike. The practice is grounding and helps me to stay fully connected to my body. I've discovered a profound sense of healing through this simple practice: letting my skin touch the earth.

Our drive led us to Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America, where the salt flats blanketed the basin like a shimmering mirage. The site was absolutely illuminating! We started to walk the basin with our shoes on but then quickly noticed many people walking barefoot. With each step, the salt crunched beneath my feet, and I felt a strong curiosity about the minerals beneath me. I touched the ground to test the heat and the texture before taking off my shoes. As I removed my shoes and walked barefoot, the cool touch of the earth cocooned me, grounding me in the present moment.

There's a profound beauty in the simplicity of this practice – the sensation of soil, sand, or salt against our skin can awaken something spiritual within us. It's a reminder of our innate connection to the earth and our Creator, a connection that is often overlooked in our modern, fast-paced lives.

Science tells us that this connection is more than just a fluffy feeling; it's actually deeply rooted in our biology. Studies have shown that direct contact with the earth, known as earthing or grounding, can have countless health benefits. From reducing inflammation and stress to improving sleep and boosting mood, the healing power of the earth is miraculous.

But beyond the scientific explanations lies a deeper, more spiritual understanding. As I stood in Badwater Basin, feeling the earth beneath me, I began to feel a sense of release – a shedding of the burdens I had carried with me. My breathing began to slow and deepen as I became more aware of myself in that space. The largeness of the landscape reminded me of my own smallness in the grand scheme of things, gifting me a perspective that was both humbling and freeing.

In that moment, I was reminded that healing isn't always about fixing what's broken; it's also about reconnecting with what's whole and embracing the natural rhythms of life. In the same way, the earth has the power to regenerate and renew itself, so too do we have the capacity to heal and thrive when we allow ourselves to be rooted in the present moment and rooted in God's healing embrace.

As we walked back to our car, the wind blowing the minerals around us, I carried with me a sense of peace and renewal. My feet were coated in salt as if to remind me to not quickly forget this moment. And my spirit felt lighter as if I had been cleansed by the healing touch of the earth. In a world filled with the hustle and bustle of life, sometimes all we need is to pause, take off our shoes, and let the earth remind us of the simple yet profound truth: that we are all connected, and in that connection lies the power to heal.

Some of this may stir things that would be helpful to allow a coach, therapist or mentor to journey with you on. Do it! And remember, these are not fix it alls. They’re not “the answer” and they’re not “the only”. They are what they are, practices and suggestions. Try them on for size and make them yours.
